Hey guys,

I'm new to this forum and I really need some help. I have a 1988 4Runner with a 22RE. It smokes white and black. White I believe is from the valve stem seals. Black I believe is from overfueling as it gets terrible gas mileage. I checked the engine codes and it has a code 12 and 52. It needs a new knock sensor to fix the 52 but I am having trouble with the 12. I'm not sure where to start with the troubleshooting. The ignition doesn't always start the truck and the previous owner installed a starter button. With the button, it will start but sometimes it takes a minute and a few pumps on the accelerator. Another wierd thing is it goes into some sort of limp mode when the engine light illuminates. What it does is it creates some sort of rev limiter where it won't rev past 15-1700 rpms until you let the clutch out a little. It won't do this when the check engine light is off.
