clutch is soft 88 4x4
#1
my clutch pedal is very soft, it seems very easy (like a gas pedal) to depress.
i also have a 86 and that one feels much stiffer- more resistance.
on more info,
bought this and replaced the clutch (then, due to being soft, not slipping) with DeathCouger, we replaced the flywheel, center bearing, clutch etc, (all oem) and it works, it sticks, it doesnt slip..but
its just so soft.
how can i get the pedal to have more resistance, or is this normal ?

will check for air bubbles, no we didnt do that..thanks
what is the "pressure plate"..is that the bracket that goes around the shaft ? that was either replaced or just cleaned and good.
it does feel like a air bubble, and if it is a bubble, would multiple pumps tighten it up (as it would on the brakes) ?

so, im glad your saying that, b/c i am pretty thorough...
your saying, (and everyone chime in too please) the 88's (at least 2 sofar) have a different type clutch or slave cylinder ?
it just feels too easy. i pumped it a bunch, but its the same.
it works, and i know the clutch is brand spankin new, so its either the slave has a higher compression ratio or its air..
and if you bled it 4 times, i can have faith its a different slave..

The clutch is operated hydraulically. An air bubble in the system might make it feel 'spongy' like pedal pressure changes a bit and the clutch engage / disengage point is kind of 'floating'.
But saying that the pedal 'feels' soft points to either a pressure plate with less pressure required to actuate it, or the clutch master cylinder has a significant advantage over the slave cylinder, compared to what you're used to.
If the clutch is disengaging well before your pedal hits the floor, I'd guess everything is fine and all you're feeling is normal.
If you want more resistance, install springs on the release arm and clutch pedal to fight your foot.

UPDATE...
went to Nix99 today (best toyota parts place) and after talkn w/DeathCouger (again helping ) i remember (he reminded actually) the infamous weak brackets...but mines ok
the problem he did find was a leaking master cylinder...(at least i know before its too late)
so, i guess i have another project...

Leaky master cyl.

haven't fixed it yet
been working on my bmw...and selling the 86 extra cab...
i guess there was some fluid there, but its not leaking...been driving it for a month, and all is ok.
i guess i should not forget about it, but i have grown accustomed to the "easy" pedal...
but, i think a rebuilt master cylinder is around 30 bucks. fluid is around 10, and the time to bleed it all, is a few hours

mmm... pizza. combination?
and don't forget the nature of a hydraulic clutch will make it seem soft, maybe even 'numb' or possibly 'twitchy' compared to a cable or linkage actuated clutch....
and DC did reference free pizza anyways... so make it hard for him to fix.

My clutch has always been super soft. Even after I installed my marlin clutch. Can't complain though, I can DD this thing in traffic everyday easy!
Last time I jumped behind the wheel of my friends ranger my leg almost fell off by the time I got home..

i am used to it now, but it sure does seem easy. someday, i will test drive a few other 88 3slo-s and do a comparison, till then, i guess it can / will wait.
thanks for all the replies
