clutch problem after swimming
k searched a pile of clutch threads but need an idea. my 3.0 l 5 speed sat in a swamp with water up to the gear shifter for a month. finally rescued it by renting a skidder. still started up and drove it 10 km out of the bush.
soo i left it in 4 lo 2nd gear. someone tried to pull it out when i wasnt there. after they were unsuccessful they broke a window to take it out of gear and pulled it out so they could get by. i put a new clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder in and bled it but the clutch wont disengage. the plunger is extending far enough but i cannot get it into gear.
any ideas? or just yank the tranny and see whats up?

Won't go in gear at all? That's probably not the clutch then. I can get mine in any gear, as long as the engine isn't running. Whether the cluch is pedal is floored or not.
Hate to tell ya, but you flooded your transmission with water to the point that it's totally seized up. RUSTED SOLID!!!
Right on! That's a whole new level of tranny carnage. You're bound to win the award for that at least!

Definatley not a good idea to leave your truck stuck in a swamp for a month, your transmission is probably toast and i would also check your front and rear diffs, there probably full of water also.

sorry guys. changed all oils and lots of water. i know tried to rescue the little guy 4 times before had to get a skidder in and toasted a 3.0l in buddies 4runner.
it will go into gear when not running. but cant get it in gear when running even though its bled and plunger is fully extended. can mud be holding clutch engaged even if the plunger is fully extended in the disengaged position?

Yeah, the clutch is the least of your worries...

I'm not getting on you at all, b/c I don't have a clue what where you went wheeling looked like...
But this is EXACTLY why I don't go wheeling with anything less than a 30 foot snatch strap, one D shackle MINIMUM, and a come-a-long or Hi-Lift...
B/c even winches can fail...

I've had the same issue the first time when my hilux had been in the water for hours before we were able to got her out.
Cleaned it and parked it overnight (with everything okay) to discover that the clutch looked like it was toast the next morning. Exact same symptoms like you discribe.
In my case the clutch had simply rusted, but I was able to break the rustlayer by doing this;
Use a large strap and hook the rear to a fixed point like a large tree.
Make sure you have enough slack to get rolling a few feet (before it stops you dead).
Put it in first gear, push down the clutch all the way and KEEP that pedal down!
Start and give it some gas.
As soon as you are rolling, floor the gas (with the clutch still floored also!!)
Now prepare for impact (and to release the gaspedal).
If that doesn't free it up the only other choice you have is replacing the clutch.
That said, after 2 months in water it should be replaced anyhow cause the throwout bearing is toast and will kill your clutch anytime soon.

awesome, i ll give it a try. planning to change it over the winter anyway but would like to get it mobile. thanks.
the sad part was my friends jeep danced around me after i told him id be pullin him out. ha. and it rained 13 inches in that month. we had so much gear. straps, winch, high lift, and went back 4 times but could only get within a mile of it after the first time. another guy burnt out his 17000lb winch trying to get it out but it was just suctioned in. skidder cost me $400 bucks and i wished i wouldve done that the next day. even bent the rear leaf hangers pullin it out. its a champ though. started and drove out the rest of the 10 mile trail once it was free.

My clutch does wierd stuff to sometimes. If i dont drive it for a couple weeks to a month, when i push it it drops strait to the floor and wont come out. I have to push it in and pull it out for about 10 minutes and it will finally build pressure. I think it just looses prime. Maybe you should try that.

I think all you did is rust the clutch linings to the flywheel and pressure plate. If you want get some one to pull while you hold down the clutch pedal. Some serious yanking with a strap may snap it loose. Otherwise enjoy a 10 hour clutch replacement job and a new disk. Sandpaper will fix the flywheel and pressure plate. Happens on farm tractors alot that are left out in the field.

That is awsome, while frusterating it is highly entertaining to the rest of us we did not have to deal with it.

some before and after. most of the damage was caused by people pulling it out when i wasnt there. the front was a tree from the skidder pullin me thru the bush.

the frame s good still.
i know it doesnt look bad. not too much experience getting stuck and all we had was that jeep and straps but my first time in the muskeg. not prepared and it rained all weekend and so much that month. water was half way up the doors the rest of the month.
burnt out a 10000 lb winch and the chev had to use two snatch blocks with the 17000 lb winch he had.
some quadders busted a window and light and stole my battery and gas too. like to just say thanks to them.
