Clunk from front in 4wd under load
1995 4Runner V6 Auto
33" tires
Stock everything else
ADD hubs
Out on the trails today. At one point, we exited the bush and were parking on a rocky river bank. I still had the truck in 4wd and did a really tight turn. Felt the drivetrain binding
After this, when in 4wd and under load...like climbing or letting the engine brake down a steep section...it's periodically clunking from the front end. Kinda feels like missing a tooth on a gear...lurching. Did the rest of the way out in 2wd High (except really steep downs, it's icy/snow here already) which was...interesting. No noise in 4wd when just on level ground.
What have I broke? Has anyone ever broke a ADD Hub due to binding like this? Did the front diff loose a tooth? Suggestions to diagnose?
I plan to start with inspecting the hubs since it's the easiest. Drain the diff next looking for metal? Searched alot and didn't see anyone mentioning the same symptons but maybe they would describe it differently. Any help would be appreciated.

Well, the hubs on the ADD trucks are simply flanges. There is nothing to break unless you managed to snap the flange... that would be quite the acomplishment!
I would drain the fluid in the diff aswell as the fluid in the t-case. See if you have any metal shavings, and go from there.

Well, the boots are good and new but the boots would not have been the issue here, I'm pretty sure something broke during that turn. What should I look/test for?

Well, the metal chunks falling out of the diff as I drained the fluid confirms where the issue lies. I am somewhat disappointed that the diff would be the first thing to fail...more disappointed that anything at all would fail given the circumstances. Got me re-thinking my 33s.

I already have one on the way, complete center, 175kms.
My axle code seemed strange to me (G144) with a high 4.8 gear ratio despite the V6 Auto. I thought that was a 4cyl/31s ratio. At any rate I managed to find one and it also cam out of a 95 V6.

You can re-gear the front differential, as it is the same as any other front diff from an alike yota.
Its the rear 4.88 diff that is different
I am surprized the front diff gave out so easily! My girlfriends runner drover over 80km in 4wd on dry pavement (I had changed the dash bulbs to LED's and the 4wd light stopped working the day before). No damage!! I was sure the front diff was garbage.
Anyways, how much did you pay for the front diff?

I'm also quite disappointed the diff gave out under these circumstances. Did I mention this truck has 138,000kms with one original owner (lady) commuted to work in it <15kms round trip for 14 years?
I paid $300 for the diff. 175,000kms on it. Got it from 4xToys near Lethbridge. Guy has over 200 old toyota trucks/runner/cruisers and over 30, 1990-95 Runners alone.
