I have a 1994 SR5 4x4 4Runner...

When I back out of my driveway and cut the wheel sharp to the right, the front driver side wheel clicks/knocks.

What would this be, it is only when I turn extremeley sharp.

 

Your steering stops are worn past the rubber to the metal don't worry its normal and you can replace them its nothin but a rubber stop.

 

So here I've been thinking I need new CV joints, and it's just those dumb stops? You just saved me a bunch of money.

I do need new CV Joints, and the symptoms of mine are the clicking and knocking when it's in 4x4. If yours happens all the time it isn't the CVs, it's the stops. but if it's just in 4x4 then it's the CVs.

 

yeah, mine happens all the time, at full lock, when going over a bump. I even greased the stops thinking that they were causing the noise, but gave up when it didn't help.

Although I have heard a noise similar to this when turning in 4x4 also, so my luck my CV shafts are probably missing a couple teeth as well as no rubber on my steering stops. DOH

 

I just called up the local dealership. The ends are actually a plastic cap, not rubber, and they're available to purchase for decently cheap (I think the pair cost me $16CAD)

 

If it makes a clicking noise like "click click click" instead of just a pop or a grind noise, its not the steering stops. Its the CV. On 4Runners, the CV axles are always in motion via the drive flanges, so wearing out to the point of clicking is a very real possibility.

Its likely that your steering stops are worn as well, so replace those first, and see if the noise goes away. If not, you know what you have to do.

Well good news (for me), I was about to run to the liquor store and before I went I rubbed some Lucas Oil Stabilizer all over the (4) steering stoppers. This stopped my noise, so luckily I think my CV's are fine.

We'll see when I get it in some mud I suppose.

check your cv boots. if they are cracked or torn, chances are they need replaced. when the boot cracks, it allowed water to get inside the universal, causing rust and eventually failure. the same holds true for front wheel drive cars. mine does the same thing, the cv needs replacing, but i gotta get the damn thing on the road again and running proper before i tackle that.

I've always just put a small blob of grease on mine. It keeps them quiet for a long time... and a tube of grease dedicated to the steering stops is cheap and lasts a long long time.

 

Yeah I hear you. I've already added the grease, just wanted something a little bit more. If anyone finds them, Im stoked. I guess I can just call up the dealer.

 

They have the caps on ebay. Supposedly one dude makes them.....new and improved over stock/OEM.

Well, they're pretty cheap at the dealer. Or, used to be, atleast. Don't know what they run now.
