So I bought an 88 4runner with no rear bumper or "bumper extensions". Needless to say I'm looking for something to stick on there. Stamped steel factory replacements are cheap but I can't find the plastic bumper extensions and I'd also need to get a separate hitch anyway. Figure an aftermarket solution might be a better, more robust option.

So I'm after a very clean and basic rear bumper with an integrated hitch. Hitch doesn't have to be capable of towing, just for hitch mounted racks. I'm not planning on crazy rock crawling, just rutted out sometimes muddy jeep roads in the mountains so I won't need any serious protection.

The one from trail gear is reasonably priced but I don't really dig the looks all that much. Anyone have any other suggestions? Help would be much appreciated!

Just what look do you like a tube type bumper or a plate type??

A simple piece of rectangle tubing a 2" receiver mounts for your vehicle could be made pretty reasonable.

The more bells and whistles of course the higher the price.

in fact if you wanted the complete project could be bolted together.

It really comes down to what you want .

Those from addicted off road look pretty sweet. I like the plate bumpers best but tube bumpers are generally more cost effective?

I like the trail gear one ok but it doesn't seem to sit tight to the tailgate of the truck. Seems to be a pretty significant gap there. I also don't think I really want or need the extra tube protection on the rear quarters.

the tube bumpers are supposed to be stronger and lighter.

if you had a tubing bender and welder you could fab your own.

I may end up with the trail gear. At $288 it's pretty cheap and obviously tougher than the stocker. I'm not in love with the looks and it may be overkill for my needs though.

I've been looking around a bit for someone around here to help me fab one. I've mig welded a little bit but at this point I don't have the equipment or the experience to make something I'd want to hang on the back of my truck. Not without a lot of help at least.
