Checking out a 22re block
I'm going to be buying a 22r/re block pretty soon. Other than cracks and obvious abuse, what should I specifically look for? He is going to remove the head for me so I can basically buy the complete bottom end (what I want) and so I can take a look at the cylinder walls.
I was told it has 50psi in #1 cylinder and the rest are fine. Is there anything else I should look for?

Well, there's really not a WHOLE lot that can be completely screw up on the block itself that can't be repaired easily. I mean there's the obvious gouges in the cylinder walls like you were saying, and as long as he doesn't snap a head bold off in the block when he removes the head, that's really the two main things you want to look for.
If it just blew a HG, and that's the only reason he's taring the motor down and selling it (which is the way it sounds from reading the description), then the crank, rods, and pistons should be in good shape enough to have refurbished, because the bearings should have taken most of the wear (although I'd recommend replacing the pistons if they've got a ton of miles on them).
Oh, and he doesn't mention in the description, but ask him if the lower end has been rebuilt before... and if so, ask him if he just honed the cylinders or had to bore it over... that'll be a handing bit of information to have when it comes time to machine it And he does mention a resurface... make sure it was the head, not the block...

he doesn't know much about it. It was his friends. But he sounds like a pretty nice guy. He said it spins over freely (like it should) and #1 piston is clean unlike the others. Cylinder walls look fine.
He doesn't know anything about it being bored. He said it might have been honed (kinda looks like it to him) and is not sure if it was completely rebuilt or not. I don't think so, but I'll pick it up tomorrow and report back.

I don't know if all oversize aftermarket pistons are marked, but mine from Engnbldr are stamped 0.50, which is mm. They are .020" over. Look for anything like that on the clean piston.
