Can I pull codes and read them without a scanner? If so how is it performed?

Run a search on pulling codes. It can be done.

 

depends what year some you can jump the diagnostic port at e1 and te1 then get in the cab and watch the CEL flash (this is obd1 equipped vehicles 2nd gen) count the times it flashes and that is your code. You can search for the codes there are plenty of threads on it. good luck.
