Charging gauge / battery question

OK, here is a new one......

'88 22RE in a SR-5 PU

Battery Light, Parking Brake indicator light at the same time and the Charge gauge goes from the high end of normal to 18 volt when i hit a bump, then hit another and everything goes back to normal. Also noticed that the fan speed seems to "speed up" when this happens...... we have been in some cold weather here (was -2 this AM and has been below 32 for about 3 days.)
the battery seems new and strong. the alternator is clean and looks to be replaced by the PO reciently (i have had the truck for 2 months).

Could the alternator be the root of the problem? if he replaced with one form a junk yard (a very real possibility) and it is from a different year/model, could this be causing trouble? should i just go get a new/ rebuilt and reaplce it?

tahx in advance for all the great suggestions/advise.

Check for loose connections around the alternator and battery and check the grounds.
