i believe this is the evap can or charcoal can. hard to determine from haines/chilton manual images.

i noticed the small line that comes off the PURGE on the can to the ? was severed and melted as it was resting on the header. where does this line go?

The small hose coming from the bottom just hangs down left open.
The small vacuum hose your arrow is pointing to goes to the bimetal valve on the sensor cluster behind your intake manifold then goes up and connects to the "P" vacuum port on the throttlebody.
If the bimetal valve is broke you can just run it up to the throttle body "P" port, Works the same and passes smog.

The "bimetal valve" Punchy is referring to is usually called the Thermal Vacuum Valve (though sometimes the BiMetallic Switching Valve). Without some connection to the purge line, the Evap Canister will fill with fuel vapor and have no where to go. You'll get a strong fuel smell, and then eventually fuel dripping out of the canister. As Punchy says, you can bypass the TVV (the replacement part is about $65), but your truck will probably run poorly when cold.

 

ok, scope, that was extremely helpful. much appreciated. missed all the posts, was starting from part #'s, and i'm still on the learning curve(as painfully obvious) so i had to id that part, then the first 367,841 hits were parts suppliers.

It's really easy to repair the TVV if the plastic vacuum line hookup is broken off. Couple bucks for a piece of 5/32 aluminum pipe, a little filing and drilling, and a bit of glue.

 

In my case the plastic was too crumbly; I completed the repair, but it quickly re-broke.

But for $65, if you've got the time it's probably worth the effort at least once.

I have never had problems bypassing the TVV, The amount of flow through that line is so little and it opens at 95f anyways.
In the summer in some states its always open.
