Hey all,

I am new to Toyotas. I just bought a 91 2wd pickup that is an Arizona truck with no rust. I got it right for the money, but I want a 4wd truck. My question is, Are the frames the same between the 2wd and the 4wds. Can I change the suspension pieces over. And what year of parts/trucks will work. I'm not afraid of getting into it, just need to know the direction I need to move. Thanks, Richard

 

frames are different.

2wd have the torsion bars on the lower control arms, 4wd have the torsion bars on the upper arms.

easiest option would be to do an SAS- solid axle swap, so you don't need the torsion bars at all.

Then, you'd need a transmission to work for your setup.

 

yea. . . . . . . sas would be the only "cost effective" (if there is such a thing) way to go.

transmission, transfer case, associated cross member(s), drive-shafts, gears, axle(s), springs, shackles, shocks, shock-mounts, steering components, wheels, tires, days of cutting, measuring, tacking, "oh shi!ing", cutting, measuring, re-tacking, welding, i believe a computer/ some wiring is in the mix too.

buying a 4x4 would be much cheaper

ALSO, you have a smaller, and I believer more narrow axle, than 4wd. It's also 5 lug, so IFS or SAS you're going to have 5 lug rear wheels and 6 lugs up front, unless you swap the rear axle too.

 

def easier to buy a 4x4.

Assuming they make one for that axle, putting a locker in the rear of the 2wd would definitely help you go places. Depending on where you wanted to go of course.

 

If your not scared to do the work, i think its more cost effective to just do a sas on a 2wd truck.
It would just be silly to put 4x4 IFS on it.

But either way it looks like you have a lot of reading to do.

If you are that bored that you need something to consume any free time you thought you might have.

Along with all the needed skills plus the equipment to do said work.

If you like that cab and bed I think the fabrication to install that on a good 4X4 Running gear would still be a lot of work time wise but not skill wise.

Swap the clean body over to a truck with a bad body.
If the motor is good, keep it, and the tranny. Sell the frame or scrap it, your choice.

depending on the 4x4 body, you might be able to swap that back over, and have a nice little ghetto get-around..
