CB mount

So I did a little searching to see where folks have mounted their cb radios. I really liked where Corey mounted his in his '91 (Thanks for all the advice!!) and right as I was about to mount mine on my glove box I got an idea for a different location.

I wanted to try installing it in the center console.

So I pulled off the plastic piece at the bottom to see what was behind it. You can see the Light Reminder Relay mounted in the upper left. You can also see where I took a hack saw and cut off the two lower mounting tabs.

After setting the radio in the slot I noticed there wasn't any good way to attach the mount supplied with the radio. I also had a few constraints on how it could be positioned. It needed to be as far back as I could get it, but still angled upwards. I keep change in my ash tray and didn't want the tray banging into the radio every time I opened it. So, I flipped the factory hanger upside down and measured how much longer it needed to be to rest on the tranny hump. I went with 1.5" longer than stock and bought some flat stock at Lowes for $5. My neighbor is a boiler maker and he fabbed up the new mount for me. I did an ok job painting it.

I removed the Light Reminder Relay and shoved it up behind the cigarette lighter for now then bolted the new mount to the tranny hump. My DeWalt cordless drill was too long to fit in that space to run the self tapping screws so I resorted to my 3/8" Angle drill to get the job done.

Running out of time I went ahead and used the cigarette lighter adapter to power the radio but after my trip to WV I'll work on hard wiring it in. Here's the finished product with the ash tray closed.

Here it is with the ash tray open.

Eventually I'd like to get a little sheet metal to dress up the sides for a more finished look. Anyway, what do you guys think?

Looks good! I have a 3rd gen, I mounted it below the steering wheel on the right side. Still have plenty of leg room too.

Looks good.

Have a question.

The cover piece you took off i gave to a fellow YT'er. And had planned to modify one to work, but haven't found a pocket one to use. What are your plans for yours?

PM if you would like to sell it.

Thank you
