Catalytic converter. Is it needed?

I have a 1995 Toyota pick up 4x4 3.0 V6 and it has a cracked catalytic converter. I've heard mixed reviews about cutting it off and just welding a piece of pipe in its place. I still have a muffler on and not a straight pipe all the way through. There are no tests or vehicle checks in my state so I'm not worried about that. I just want to know if it's bad for my engine and if it will affect the gas mileage. Or any other pros and cons you guys know of. Thanks

Does your truck have a O2 sensor after the converter? It can possibly throw a code as it is not noticing any difference before and after the converter. If your truck does not have a sensor after the converter, it will not effect the truck. Trucks with out converters do have a different smell that is more noticeable with out a converter. Not bad for the engine and should not effect gas mileage either way.

There is no benifit to just removing a working convertor on our trucks so there is no real pros to it. Magnaflow sells a universal convertor for about $60 that is a nice replacement. Also by removing it the exhaust will be louder and not in s good way.
