Carburator air depurator hose question

This toyota 86 22r air depurator hose ( marked in yellow )costs here in Acapulco near to 180 US dollars, so I make one out of a VWfilter hose found in the streets and a piece of my aspirator 2 inches tube and it came out pretty good and fits fine... but I still have doubts about the air box ( circle in red ) ..what is it for? is it important? do I have to attach it to my home made hose?
Thanx..!
By the way I´m a newby learning a lot from you guys...Hi 2 everyone...

Aleast what i've been told and learned that the box is nothing more than a collector for trash and particles and stuff. You kinda need it. Toyota didn't put it on there for the heck of it. Its got a purpose to collect trash so try and get one off a junk truck. or make one.... old bottle maybe? lol
