You can do whatever you want... I repaint mine black occasionally. along with a lot of the undercoating.. (looks good)
Now my only concern would be any kind of fluild getting on it and taking it off.. (brake clean, brake fluid, etc...............)

Ok, I painted my leaf springs (Alcans) but here's the trick, sprinkle lots of graphite powder over the wet paint and let them dry good in the sun, then rub or sprinkle more graphite powder over them. That will keep them from sticking together. I saw afterward that 4crawler had found a special graphite paint, so that's another option.

i spray painted my old pack and it lasted 3 years with out cracking or flaking.
99cent gloss black from walmart and the last time i did it was the walmart rust paint. No issues ever. Rock rash was the reason for the respray.
