Angry Can I bypass my Smog Pump?

My poor smog pump sounds like it has a bearing that is about to let loose, there seems to be ALOT of clattering coming from it. I have looked at getting a new one at the auto stores but can't seem to find one. I have even looked into the junkyards and still have had no luck. One of the folks at the auto parts store said to abandon it and just bypass the pully with a smaller belt. I normally wouldent want to do that, but with the trouble I am having finding one, I'f afraid I may not have a choice if it indeed let's-go on me. Any comments on how to deal with this issue would be helpfull.

I had a 1977 toyota pickup (way back in high school) where the air pump started making a horrible racket. The dealer wanted too much for it. I removed it and related hoses. Never had a problem with emissions either.
What year truck we talking?

It's a 91 4X4 4cyl with AC, Manual trans. I just don't want it to cause other issues, like messing up my new 02 sensor.. Etc...

a 91 computer compensate? lol. no.

It's an emissions thing. You can bypass it and run just fine....hell, you might even gain some fuel economy.
