I never use my A/C because I live downtown and when I'm idling at a red light it stops blowing cold. I can hear the relay in the passenger side kick it on and off as if to prevent the engine from dying. Does anyone know the solution to this problem?

 

Well on my 93 V6 with auto trans (not sure what you have) there is an adjustment screw on the AC amp to set at what idle speed the compressor turns off. Mine is adjusted to the lowest rpm so it stays on at idle. The adjustment screw is up behind the glove box.

Yeah remove the glove box and you should see it.

 

I guess that adjustment screw is really to set the pressure (not rpm) at which the compressor will switch off, but I could be wrong. So if that doesn't work you might check the pressure of the freon.

 

I dunno the V6, but on the 22RE trucks, a tach signal is required to turn the compressor. It's designed to prevent the compressor from turning at too-low RPM.

 

My truck doesn't have a tach. Is there still a signal going to the A/C? I have tried idling it up to fix the problem, but then it Idles so high at start up that it freaks me out.

Yes, the tach "signal" is generated by the ignitor.
I'd suspect that the device the measures your tach signal isn't functioning properly or is misadjusted as the guys above have indicated.

 

the compressor could also be starting to go out! but hopefully its just the freon lever

 

I didn't have a chance to look for that adjustment. I'm sure it's not the compressor going out. I can hear the relay kick on and off when the RPMs are low so either pressure or RPMs seem to be the trigger like y'all have been saying. It's been like this for years. I just roll down the windows and enjoy the outside air. I just want to fix it for when more sensitive people are riding with me.
