Buying a Long Block. Any Suggestions?
#21
Thanks for all the advice guys. So far here is where I am at as far as what I am planning on doing.
Short Block................Salvage yard....$300 or so
Machine work.............CarQuest.........$300 - $500 depending on block condition.
Performance head.......Engnbldr..........$450
Piston set (Size TBD)...Engnbldr..........$66
Ring set (Size TBD).....Engnbldr..........$44
Gasket set.................Engnbldr..........$64 (Also have some available on ebay for cheaper)
Rods, Mains, TW........ Engnbldr.........$64
Plugs........................Engnbldr.........$11
Oil Pump...................Already have
Water pump...............Already have
Timing Set.................Already have
Not sure about still
Cam - 261 or the 268. I assume the 261 because I am looking for fuel economy over High Output
Head Bolts - Should I go with Engnbldr or look for ARP bolts? Major price difference but I don't know the durability of Engnbldr's bolts
Timing cover - If the one off the short block is in good shape (If it comes with one) should I still get one from Engnbldr?
Did I miss anything and am I looking in the right place for my parts?
Thanks for all your help again!

As already mentioned, I would suggest buying local over long distance. If you plan on getting the reman, make sure you go through the engine and double check their work. I ordered a reman 22r a few years back, with warranty, and didn't double check their work. Its my own fault I guess I gave them the benefit of the doubt. Wont do that ever again. 500 miles later almost to the exact mile, the nuts securing the rod caps back themselves off and I threw the rod through the side of the block. when I dropped the pan I found a perfectly good nut, bearing half and rod cap. The company would not honor my warranty. There goes the 4k I just put into the engine. If you buy used and have it machined, do your research on the company that does the work. I have had my share of crap machine shops. Make sure they know what they are talking about and try and look at their work. What does their shop look like, is it organized and as clean as a shop can be or is there a bunch of trash laying around? These are the things I would look for. Best of luck

I know that a bare block can be had for under $100 around here. Try to find a complete wore out engine on craigslist. I've seen so many for under $200 with crank, rods, balancer, and even a flywheel along with other things thrown in. I guess you are expecting to do some engine work in the scheme of things.
Engnblder is a great place to get your parts: If you get the whole engine kit including pistons they have a complete package. Call them and ask them about it. I think its right around $200 for everything.
If you order the high performance head along with a cam you will get the cam for only $100. They may install it for you too!!!! One less thing to do and their work is top notch.
I used ARP studs but it was not necessary. Their bolts are fine, probably from the same manufacturer the the dealer uses. And no, the dealer does not get all their parts from Japan!!!
Use a new timing cover, it may be included in the package I mentioned above. Have it on the block when it goes to the machine shop!
The only part they sell that is controversial are the chrome piston rings in their package. It takes someone who knows what they are really doing to prepare the cylinders for them. They will last 300k miles but they also have to break in to work! For some do it yourself'ers this many times does not happen. Talk to them on the phone!!!! They are so helpful and I can't express this enough.
