Buying advice...

http://tampa.craigslist.org/car/395633794.html

I am selling the 99, and replacing it with a cheap truck and a motorcycle. This is the only 1st gen that I could find for sale withing 300 miles of me. What should I ask the guy when I call besides the basic stuff like R or RE, miles, interior etc...

The other question I have about 1st gens, is about the bed. Can I take the top off, remove the roll bar, and load a MX bike up there if I put some kind of wheel stop down?

Any input appreciated!

Ask how often the oil was changed. How much rust and where? When was the last time the clutch was changed..The 22r is nearly bullet proof. Its a great engine especially with the manual trans. Yes the top comes off. Not sure if you can cram a MX bike in there or not...I'd like to see you try though! If not trailers are cheap at harbor freight. Thats a good looking truck for that price.

The truck has 125,000 on a working odometer. The a/c blows warm, and there is only one rust spot (hole), above the windshield on the pass. side. It is the 22RE. It has automatic hubs. The gas guage is broken. He told me he has owned it since 50k, and the he has not had any engine trouble, and the only major maintnence done was the timing chain.

How hard would it be to level that thing out?

ask about things replaced
starter, AFM, EGR, ALT and ask when was the last time the brake fluid was flushed.
the thing I have come to find with these older trucks is plan on doing and or replacing most of the brake components and the items I stated at the top.

Check it for rust. If it's rusting around the windshield, it's got rust in other places too. (The floor pan on the passenger more than likely.)

Replacing the springs in the rear is easy.

Ok, I have been pondering all week. I am going to look at it on saturday. I think I am going to bring 1500, but offer him 1k and see what that gets me. I still have a question or two.

I have never had a vehicle with any rust. how hard is it to fix? If there is a rust hole in the roof, do I just cut out around it and have someone full in the hole?
I have also never had to fix A/C. How much could it cost to fix if it was really messed up? He says that the fan just blows warm air, so it could just need a recharge, but I am going to expect the worst.
Lastly, does this truck have the same lug pattern as my 99, 6x5.5? I would like to know because I have a set of cragar soft 8s in the garage.

my buddys 4runner had a leak on the windshield we had to remove it and when we did there was barely any metal holding it on the truck he had to do some creative bondo patching to say the least check the fender wells where the clutch pedal is at,this is a common rust hole place
get under the truck and inspect it well.
I bought a 1980 j10 jeep years ago and did not look it over to well and the frame was rusted out where the rear leaf spring was not saying this truck has this problem but it is better to check it and know than buy it and find out later.
