Yeah finished a day of trails only to have the key break in the ignition when I turned the truck off to unlock hubs and have a cig before the road.

So how or can I take the ignition apart to get the key out?

 

Also the steering wheel is locked so is it a bad idea to force the ignition to unlock so I can remove the cylinder?

I do not believe there is a quick fix to get the rest of the key out ive tryed all the stupid crap and it got me nowhere but frustrated. So im looking for the best way to get the cylinder out.

 

pull the column apart. i'm not sure if you have airbags or not, but i'd definitely pull the fuse for them before you start playing with wires in there. usually you can pull the column apart, and you'll see the cylinder screwed to the inside or something of the sorts. you just disconnect it, and go to the dealer for a new one.

 

mines broken in ther too. i lit my kid drive it and he brought me back the broken key. at least i can still use it using the stub. but i gotta get it fixed too.

 

i put a new cylinder in mine just a couple weeks ago and it was easy. first unhook the battery and then take the trim off of the column. you are supposed to have the key in the accessory position and there is a little dimple that you depress and the whole cylinder pulls right out. the install is just the reverse.

 

but if my steering is stuck locked do I need to force the ign to the acc position? and if so can I do it with like a screwdriver etc? also is there no way to remove the key part after I have taken the cylinder out? I have another key

 

well i forced it with a big ol screwdriver and a wrench now i need to pull the cyl

 

Im trying to push the release pin to get it out and as far as I can tell its in the ACC position but the pins not coming I even broke it a little trying to use a punch ....now I have no Idea what to do to get this pos out

Tried getting the broken off key out? Lots of possibilities on a old worn key. Small files, duct tape, bubble gum, JB weld, etc.

 

smashed it out about 10 min ago I guess i need new ign cyl now but i can start it with pliers atleast for now

 

Ok now I need someone who knows about or has done this. I have taken the old cyl lock out and there is a piece between the lock assy and the actual switch.

this piece engages the switch from the lock assy and also the steering wheel lock. Problem is it came out and I cant find the secret to getting it back in.

It needs to be back in for the new lock assy to go in its like I just cant get it to line up correctly and meet the ignition switch.

I know someone out there has done this and knows what part I speak of.

 

no one has taken the piece out behind the lock cyl? seen the piece? knows how it goes in? I cant put in a new lock untill I can get this puzzle back in.

 

do you have any pictures? i just kept messing with mine until i got it all back together and working correctly.

 

heres what happened. The actual ignition switch had moved lose and backwards so that the piece was not contacting the notch in the switch for it to turn.

For whatever reason the ignition switch can come loose in the back of the lock assembly.

easy fix but only after a few hours of frustration

I was putting the piece in correct the whole time I just had to look beyond that piece duh.

 

at least you have patience hah. yesterday when i took my dash apart, when i couldnt get it back together i had a little hissy fit smashing the parts togehter till it fit.

oh I was about a straw away from going berzerker I had to stop a few times and walk away.

 

I broke my windshield having a huge hissy fit when I couldn't get things back together. Oh well. lol

 

ok well i actually am an automotive locksmith lol so do you know what to do now? i replaced the cylinder in mine a few months ago. if you need a cylinder i could probably help you out im thinking if you want i could get you one and rekey it so it matches your doors and everything pm me if your intere
