Broken Door Locks

Hello, I may be creating a few more threads soon about all the little things wrong with my new truck, so I appreciate your wisdom and experience. This one is more important than the rest at the moment, though.

I have a 1990 4x4 and both external locks have been severely damaged by someone with a screwdriver. They can't be opened with the key, because, well, the screwdriver destroyed the opening for the key. However, the doors successfully lock on the inside and can't be opened from the outside. Also, the handle mechanism works fine for opening both doors from the outside. In summary, the handles work fine for opening the doors from both the inside and the outside, the doors can lock from the inside, but they just cannot be opened or locked from the outside.

My question is, what parts will I likely need to buy to replace the locks? I have been looking around on parts sites and have been confused because of all the different parts you can buy. If I don't really need a complete new locking mechanism for each door (approx. $250/ea. from my research), I would like to be able to just replace the locks.

Any advice or assistance you can provide would be great! Thank you. Also, if pictures would be helpful, I can post them later.

My guess would be that you need new key cylinders that can be found here (or any dealer). I think a locksmith can change these to fit you current keys.

Go to the junkyard and grab two lock cylinders from a 89-95 pickup or 90-95 4runner. Make sure you jot down the make, model and year.

Take these to your local locksmith along with a spare key to your current locks. They can re-key them pretty cheap.

To install, remove the door panel ( the window crank can be a pita!) And start taking things apart.

I had did this to my drivers side lock after some jerkoff tried to break in..

Fairly easy to do imo, but I should have taken more pics and make a how-to on it...

Needed nothing more than a philips-head screw driver for the screws on the door panels, a 10m socket with a 6" extension and a ratchet to unbolt and remove the door handles so you can remove the locks from them, and a flat-head screw driver comes in handy a few times too

there's really a trick to getting the handle out of a door; it's one of those things that's hard to explain with words, but you'll see what I'm talking about when you dig into the door panel

good luck, and PM me with any questions

Really isn't that hard. For your first time pulling a door panel it may be a good idea to go to one of the local parts store and pick up a panel removal tool. It slips under the edge of the panel and lets you pop the little holder on gizs out easy. Go get your parts at a u pullit and learn there. This link may also help.
