Broken 1991 4Runner need advice

I was getting on the highway and as I was shifting into 3rd there was a clunk and it just revved with no acceleration. I thought that I had maybe just missed the gear, so i tried it again and received the same results, it also sounded like I was dragging something underneath. Luckily, 4th and 5th still worked and was able to make it to a wide enough shoulder to pull over. Now, I'm figuring that it's the transmission. But, while I was waiting for the tow truck I decided to take a look under the hood and saw that the false water pump that holds the fan and a pulley had snapped and all my belts had come off (which explained my loss of power steering).

Is there anything that would cause these things to happen at the same time?

Also, I am wanting to try and replace the transmission myself. Is that somethin' that one guy could do? Is there anything else I should fix/replace while I'm doing the transmission.

Thanks in advance

It's your clutch

It has worn out.

if 4th held fine it's not the clutch. yes you can change your own tranny but if it's your first tranny ever get help. I would drain out some tranny fluid and check the drain plug for metal. I think you stripped the counter gear on the cluster shaft but the pieces you retrieve from the oil will help.

Thanks for the info. Haven't gotten around to checking the transmission fluid for metal yet.

Is there any places online that offer rebuilt or new transmissions?

Also, is there any reason anyone could think of as to why the tranny would have and that other piece might have busted at the same time?

Engine rev may have taken out the idler that had developed a crack or something uncommon. Look it over and it should be obvious why it failed.

If 4th is gone plus the noise, as suggested, #4 gear or the cluster it mates with failed. Do you have 3rd gear? If not, the shift fork for 3-4 may have come loose. Many reports of shift forks no longer moving. Not uncommon but bad for you. Marlin Crawler offers or performs reasonably priced rebuilds with core exchange. I don't suggest letting Bugger or Bubba attempt to fix it. Some chain autotrans shops are now doing standard transmission rebuilds.

You will need help dropping the transmission. Probably 250 pounds and too much for one person with no experience. They come out easy, require finesse to put back in.

My $0.02
