Bad fan pulley?

1988 4runner with 3.0 auto 178k miles

I was driving downtown yesterday and heard a clunky knocking sound. The car in front of me pulled over with it's flashers on, so I figured it wasn't me. Wrong. Noise continued for a minute, then the belts started screaming. The truck died out, but I got it restarted and pulled over. Opened hood and waved smoke away. Some coolant was on top of the radiator and below truck, but gauge was ok. Got it towed home, searched around on here a bit. Went back out and she cranked right up. Burned off two belt, but she starts and runs just fine, no weird noises or anything.

My search found only two results, one of them being the fan pulley locking up.
Both of the pulleys behind the fan won't turn. Any advice on how to tackle the problem would be appreciated. Replace the whole fan with an electric? Other work to do while I have it disassembled? Thanks for any help.

The replacement fan pulley bracket will cost an arm & a leg from the dealer, but you have no option because you still need to run your alternator, etc. I saw one for sale on ebay the other day, relatively cheap.

The hardest part is getting it off the truck. Pull your radiator to save yourself a lot of trouble.
