i want to raise the level of all the breathing points on my Surf. so i want to know just how many are there? and where are they located. i am aware of the rear diff breather, i just need to know how many more are there!

 

front diff has one, your transmission and tcase have them too i believe.

 

I would just worry about the front and rear diff. for the transmission if you get in that deep of water you will want to change all your fuilds. aslo you cant raise the tranny one unless you want it in the cab but then youll always smell like tranny fluid or gear oil.

The rear and front are most important

 

ok,thats good to know, so how did TOYOTA raise the FJs tranny breather? or did they, i read that somewhere.

 

I've never heard anyone extend the front breather, why is that? Is it necessary to drop the front diff?

if you check the top of your rear axle, there should be a nob, or button type thing just sitting there by its self and its called a diff breather, it is what releases pressure from you diff if there is a build up, but it can sometimes let water in,so you extend it.

 

is it hard to extend them?

 

do a search theres a bunch of info with pictures etc. I thought the trans breather was where the shifter went in? so its in the cab anyway? more or less

 

Not hard at all. Plenty of info on here, check out 4crawlers website too. Has a write up with the part numbers. Can be done for less than $30.00

 

To extend your breathers you just need to remove your breather and add in an grease gun hose. it works mint i did it to mine when I used it more as a trail rig.

also have seen it done with an air line extension

 

2 brake line fittings - with the barbed end and some rubber line and a couple of hose clamps - will do both front and rear for under $30.00 - did mine a year or so ago - front was a challange in the truck, but it is do-able.....

 

My front is extended. Many others are. You do it for the exact same reason you do the rear. To prevent an inflow of water. Doesn't make sense to do one and not the other.

 

i got a noobie question, do you have to remove a nob or something? or just stick medical tube right on and thats it?

 

You'd remove the breather cap and connect the hose to that, running the hose to a higher point.

Best places to run them are the rear into the gas door filler area or behind the rear tail light and extend the front to under the hood near the firewall.

Why is only the rear listed as a common mod and is the only one in the write up section?

 

Cause the fronts a real pain int he ass to do if you have IFS..
