So I got sidetracked while working on my engine and started working on some of the surface rust on the cab. I noticed that the sealant that seals some of the joints between body panels is cracked and chipping out. I live in the desert, so it doesn't rain much, but I do wash my cars, so I was thinking that water getting in those joints is bad (duh). What is this magical sealant, and do they sell it at body shops? Its mainly in the tight spots, ie. rear quarter panel to bed, seams on the rear of the cab, etc.

 

Silicone would work if it werent visible and you didnt have to paint it, but I doubt it would last the 22 years that whatever that stuff is has.

 

seam sealer any automotive paint store sells it, even napa has it.

 

3M body seam sealant. Stuff I have is black like tar and works GREAT.

 

Just make sure you get one that stays flexible. Most do, but some are beter than others. The bed seams on the older trucks flex quite a bit. Make sure it is paintable too.

 

Thanks guys. I probably could have Googled it now that I see how close I was to the truth! But really, the extent of my body work in 16 years of wheeling has been ripping damaged doors and fenders off and replacing them with junkyard or fiberglass jobs. I never really heard of it or thought of it until I scraped a little out with a screwdriver. So thanks for the heads up!
