Blue box?

1986 Toyota R22 pickup. (auto trans)
There is a blue plastic box mounted on the drivers side in the cab.
Seems to me it has something to do with adjusting the shifting points
of the transmission? What can you tell me about it?
Or where can I read about it?

Thanks

No the engine was changed by the previous owner, the truck came out with a six cylinder, it now has a 4 cyl r22

if the truck is an 86 it did not have a 6cyl in it. Only options were 22R (carbureted), 22RE (EFI) and 22RTE sometime called 22R-TE turbo EFI. And I also believe the 22RTE engine was not put into the pickups and only the 4runners but I could be wrong as they may have been put into pickups just not sure.

wasnt the 3vz not offered untill 88? The 22rte was made to COMPETE with nissans v6 engine, so maybe thats what you mean? If i remeber correctly the 22r (Carbeurated) was never offered infront of an automatic transmission. Somehwere along the lines im sure its possible the 22rte was taken out, and a 22r (or re) was put in, and the automactic that CAME with the 22rte was left in to make the swap less involed/labor intesnive.

Same thing as the green box on 22REs I bet. Doesn't it control the fuel injection?

someone needs to confirm if the 22rte engines were ever even put into the pickups. I thought they were only in 4runners?

My daily driver is an 86 turbo regular cab 4x4 pickup

The turbo option came in both the runner AND pickup. As early as some rare 85 models and were in production untill being phased out by the 3vz

Thank you for the clarification. Also for the O.P's benefit, can you check that kick panel and see if you have the same thing there since yours should be the same year etc etc as his truck?

I was in a hurry yesterday and had to be brief, perhaps I can offer more info today.

I have owned the truck a couple of years now.
When I bought it the man told me the original engine in the truck had died, he told me it was a 6 cylinder. The truck has EFI and Turbo written all over it. The engine he put in, that is now in the truck is the 4 cylinder 22R it has a carburetor it is NOT EFI currently.

It does still have the original transmission in it and it is an automatic, title says 1986. Every part I have ever bought for the truck was for a 1986.

It is a 4x4 with manual lockouts.

I thought I had read that the "blue box" has something to do with the transmission, if it has to do with the EFI system, it would no longer be functional.

It has a "normal" and "power" mode that still function, and seem to effect the shifting of the transmission only?
It also has an overdrive selector that does not appear to work if I had to guess overdrive is enabled all the time. The truck really lacks power going up hills, leaving it in "power" mode helps, but limits top end speed and greatly effects highway MPG.
To me the truck needs to shift down well before it does, then shift back into high gear at higher RMP. I thought perhaps the blue box might hold the key...

You all have been helpful, and further information about the truck would be great.

I may do some digging and see if I can get the overdrive selector working again, overdrive may be the issue with the shifting, I know when I switch to "power" mode going up hill on the highway, it downshifts. I think it may just be kicking the overdrive out?

The only "off road" the truck sees is my rough driveway and work around the yard, otherwise it is a commuter.
