I think ZUK has some IFS topics on his site. www.gearinstall.com your looking for a how too check up. If not shoot him an email. You don't want any play in gears and like mentioned earlier the higher the gear ratio the more critical the set up. the check up will be worth it.

Did you know you can remove the front dif from the truck and still drive it? That way you can stay mobile why you do your thing to the dif.

Guys, the issue here isn't the tires, the hopping, or the driver.

Its the install and the stock carrier.

I would be willing to bet if the OP actually rebuilt the diff with quality Timken/Koyo/or Nachi bearings, and an ARB, that diff would stay together MUCH, MUCH longer. The ARB is a HUGE strength upgrade over the stock carrier, and worn bearings, etc... are the cause of failure.

You could have SASed it already for what you've got into all those diffs Stop wasting your time and money and do some upgrades!

Also, are all of your mounting locations for the front diff in good shape? I would imagine if one of those bushing was toast and the diff was allowed to skee-jaw during a high-torque operation, the bearings could get some misalignment.
I whish I had the cash for a locker but after the 200 for the diff I dont.... The mounting locations are pretty beat maybe I will try to find some in better shape before install. I am going to run some valvoline sythetic again and hope for the best.

No I couldnt have.... I spent $40 a peice for the stockers X4= $160 plus $100 for the last 529 now another $200 for this 529. Thats only $460. Maybe enough for a 5.29 third for sas, still need an axle and sas kit plus matching rear lift.... I should have never sold my 90 SAS

I think Toyota also used front IFS diffs with slightly larger bearings for the V6 application (50mm from 45mm, I think). Hopefully your new one is set up well and has the larger bearings!

Yes definitely make sure the mounting points are solid.

I have never done it, but from what I've seen inside these diffs I would have to imagine that swap is extremely straight-forward.

I needed to order an oil seal to do the swap so I just locked the add permantley with a hose clamp. I got the diff mounted before work now I just have to finish tighting it all up, add gear oil and put the lower lift braces on it.

Do you have any pictures of this process? I am about to install manual hubs and would like to permanently lock my add so i can get rid of the VSV and vacuum lines. I also need to replace an oil seal in my front diff.

Thanks in advance if you can. No worries if you can't. Maybe someone else knows a good thread that shows this. My searches haven't turned up anything.

Thanks! Thats a great write up. I'll probably tackle that this weekend. Anything that makes the engine compartment less cluttered is an upgrade in my books.

Any write ups you know about on replacing the oil seal in the front diff? I have the FSM but i would love to see a few real pictures of the process. Those little illustrations aren't too clear.
