O.K. , I'll agree, a fairly convincing arguement. I'll investigate further. 1.Because, though he berates the internet as a rumour mill, I'm not sure this guy isn't starting one here. 2. No comparison STRENGTH TEST. 3. What might sound good, may not be good. ie BIGGER IS NOT ALWAYS BETTER. 3. It flies in the face of all the expert knowledge I've obtained, very very very little of which was obtained from any website. 4. Believe nothing you hear and only half of what you read. 5. I am curious why it seems to have been easier to bust 4:10's than 4:30's in my rig. 6. Why no stock gears, that low? maybe Toyota know different.

Or maybe the 4.10's are cheaper and since they make their own transmissions and can gear them accordingly, they use what's cheapest.

Or, it could have also been a marketing decision... A 4 cylinder truck requiring a 5.29 gear would give the impression that it was a weak motor that had to be geared high and sacrificed pickup for top end.

It's hard to know what they were thinking...

Toyota offered 4.56 and 4.88's in these trucks... why not 5.29's? Because they never offered 35's stock! LOL

Well since I have a stock 22RE with 33" tires and a manual trans. I guess I should go with 4:88 gears which is what I had in mind to begin with. Thanks for helping make my decision and thanks for the good replies and lots of great info.

I rode in a truck with 35" tires and 5:29 gears and thought it felt very nice for having such big tires so that's why I made this post because I didn't want to over do it with 33" tires and too much gear.

Each gear ratio puts different stress points at certain places through the transmission, transfer case and axles, there are so many factors involved when something breaks that it can make it impossible to point fingers at ratios or quality of the product being the problem; athough some factors may influence stress on certain parts causing failure because of the gears.
