Me and my buddy were at a 4x4 truck show, and his formula toy quit running and wouldnt start.

To make a long story short, we found out his timing chain broke. He didnt want to take the head off because his truck is just an inexpensive off road toy, and he was short on cash, so we just put a timing chain on it.

Now there are some problems, I know that 22rs are interference engines, and he should have bent valves. But I did a compression test and all cylinders had close to 180PSI.

Now is a compression test a good way to check for bent valves? If thats the case, then he doesnt have any. Since 180 is close to the stock measurment for compression.

And another problem we had, his truck had no throttle response, and was sluggish. Could he have gotten the timing off a tooth? I was not there when he and another one of my friends put the chain on, and I am the only one with 22r/re mechanical experience (I dont get why they couldnt wait for me). I did notice that when the cam lined up with its mark, the balancer lined up with the 5 and not the 0 (this is when I started working on it again). Any help would be appreciated!

Do you think he bent a valve or two? I dont because it runs relatively well for being off a tooth, and the results of the compression test.

 

if it runs good and the cylinders have good compression then i dont think its a bent valve.

i would say check the timing, does the motor have any odd sounds like something is wrong or does it run smooth?

 

Well its hard to tell, it is a beater motor, so it wasnt in that good of shape to begin with, but it doesnt have the power it used to, and it'll back-fire and misfire.

 

yeah that really sounds like timing, maybe someone else will chime in

 

leak down test. you'll find a bent valve in a moment.
