beep? is THAT what you call that strange sound?

i know toyotas have historically had pathetic horns for a long time. but mine is special. it is EXCESSIVELY pathetic. *meep-meep* would be a MASSIVE upgrade. i WISH i had a *meep-meep*. it actually seems to have multiple tones, depending on how hard i push the horn button. it kinda reminds me of the short black lady in police academy (before the end when she found her voice, of course)

ok, so beyond just making fun of it, what should i do? i mean, being that it has different tones depending on how hard i push the button, could that mean there's something wrong with the button? is the actual horn getting different voltage values? or does the actual horn just suck really badly? can i simply replace it with an off the shelf generic one and have all my problems going away?

Loads of places sell "universal" horns that are adequate replacements. Just replace your existing horn with one (try jcwhitney.com, they seem to have a large selection), you can go with a simple electric one or go for broke and upgrade to some super-loud air powered one. Regardless, while you're swapping horns you might as well take the steering wheel apart and check/clean the button, sounds to me like dirty/loose contacts if the tone is changing the harder you press down.

search the forums for the ford horn swap. i got one from a junk yard out of an early 90's f250, sounds much better. takes a little bit of wiring but well worth the $10 it costs.

I had one of them on my Pickup, too, but somehow road salt got into it and killed it. It certainly was loud, though.

That would be Dixie, peow. Which would be a hilarious add-on to a pre-runner that likes to fly. The General Lee paint job on said pre-runner would be equally hilarious. Don't forget to weld the doors!

I Just Did a Horn Swap on my 97 Runner, I used a pair of VW horns I got at the Wrecker.

They fit right up in the stock locations. Way better then the little 'beep beep'
