Battery platform & body part sources?

Fixing up miscellaneous stuff on my '87 4x4, standard cab non-sr5.

One problem is the battery platform that's spot-welded into place. It's rusted through. Local dealer says they are no longer available. Where can I get another one to weld in? I can't find it on toyotapartszone.com, discountbodyparts.com, or alfaparts.net.

Next is more of a general question. What are some other online sources to look for this sort of thing?

The one in my 86 4Runner is in the same condition, but you not going to find a new one any were, what you need to is find a good one at a junk yard and drill out the spot welds to get it out. Then do the same thing to remove the one in your truck and then weld or bolt the good one in place.

You could always just weld one up out of angle iron...

None of the pull-a-parts around here allow power tools into the yard that I know of. Drills & sawzalls are out, I would have to pay them shop rate to get it. And I'm not optimistic about finding a used battery platform worth cutting out and welding in.

I'll probably end up making a new platform out of 1/8" plate. I wonder if body shops have a source for this, or if they just build/renew like I will. I've made a personal resolution over the last couple years since I started valuing my time. If it can be bought new, then likely that is both better and cheaper than building my own. But if there's no other way, out comes the fab tools.

Slacker, good link! I had seen them a few years ago and forgotten, cool.

Yeah I would definately go with the building of the new one as well. Make sure you put some good paint on it to prevent corrosion in the future.
