Base of shifter gets really hot

I have a 95 4runner 3.0L 5 speed
The base of the shifter is hot to the touch after driving.
Is this common with 4runners? What should I do if its not common?

Mine doesn't get hot, just a little warm. although I don't do a lot of stop and go, and I speed match, so I don't slip my clutch much.

I always thought it had more to do with the header and exhaust pipe than the trans itself running "hot"...
