Bad swap

I swapped motors from my 86 4runner that was totaled (motor still ran) into an 89 that ran but had a rod knocking but did run. Both 22re 5-speed. I cant get it to run now. I have gone thru everything, relays, grounds, wires. everything has tested good. The best I have gotten is a backfire thru the intake. That being said it would seem to me that my timing is 180 out. I have the crank set at 0 degrees with the cam pin at 12:00 and the distributor at 11:30. Ive been trying to get it going for a week now and Im all out of ideas. I am running all the wiring and ecu from the 89. Pulling plugs to check for fuel they all come up dry. I dont think the injectors are bad. It couldnt see why all 4 would go bad at the same time. Ive done several of these swaps but have never ran into this problem before. Any ideas would be helpful. Im almost ready to swap the harness from the 86 over and see if it will run.

So you pretty much think you have spark because the plugs are dry??

Have you checked for spark??

If that is indeed firing.

When you had the engine out did you change the timing chain??

Pull out the distributor for some reason??

Have you checked that your fuel pump is running and the fuel is going where it should be.

Or are you doing like a neighbor trying to start this engine with the AFM not plumbed into the intake.

Bad spark plug wires ?? From the moving and handling and being old

Left the rotor off

left some wires unconnected .

start at the basics and work from there.

Good luck

Make sure you have the ground wire connected where the upper and lower intake manifold bolt together. That's where the injectors ground to, i had the same problem once. It hides underneath everything and i forgot to connect it.

I have good spark.

Get good fuel pressure to rail

Have all wires plugged in. except egr related
since that is all bypassed.

What do you mean by not having the AFM not plumbed to the intake?

Yes I did pull the distributor. I redid all the top end gaskets.

The fuel pump switch is in the VAM and the pump won't come on if there is no air being pulled through the air meter. Having said that, it should at least prime when the key is turned on.

that means, did you reconnect the airbox, and air flow meter to the throttle body, if not, the injectors will not pulse, the afm tells the fuel pump to start pumping... Thats why you could have pressure in the fuel rail (turning key on primes the system), and not have fuel flow...
