I have a 88 22RE manual, new motor front to back, has a total of 24 miles on it. However, I have more oil leaks that you can shake a stick at. This in not my first motor to we can rule that out. Oil ran out the value cover, around the distributor, oil plug in the back of the block, the back of the oil pan, between the block, gasket, and pan...and the bolts are tight. Now it is leaking out the front of the pan. Let me back up for one second, each has been it own leak, meaning I fix the first then a new leak turns up. The truck runs about an hour and then I have a leak. Sounds dumb, but me and this motor are going around. So I am wondering after all that is it possible the PCV value could be faulty? And maybe its forcing the oil out??? Any thoughts?

 

do a leak down test and make sure it is not blowing by the rings.

Sometimes it can be tricky to get the rings to seat, especially if you use chrome-moly rings.

 

Is there a special way to get the rings to seat in these??

 

sure drive up a mountain. put a HUGE load on it.

 

Usually full throttle acceleration from 2000rpm to 4000rpm in 3rd gear about 15-20 times

What kind of rings did you use, and how did you prepare the cylinders?

And you aren't using synthetic oil are you?

 

They are molly rings, usually I pay attention so I use something else. I am using Mobil 1 5000, it is not synthetic, how ever I am considering trying something else...because the oil acts like its synthetic.

 

Its better to use normal oil rather than synthetic. Use 10w-30 during the break in stage then after that you can switch to synthetic.

I suggest driving around a lot.

I have had an experience with gaskets before that shocked me. I bought a new water pump and gasket and my engine still leaked (not a Toyota) I drove it around for a long time with the engine at fully operating temp and after that it did not leak. Not saying that this is true...but I think gaskets need to seat and to do that the engine needs to be hot. Good luck!

 

Why dont you check the PCV? Pull it off and blow in it. Air should go out, but not in.

 

There is nothing wrong with your oil.

If you need a new PCV get one from the dealer. Don't buy aftermarket. The price is decent at the dealer and when I replaced mine I was impressed by the quality. Looked like an updated design.
