Bad Motor

First off, I'm new to the forum so forgive me if this is a repeat post. I tried a search to no avail.

I just picked up a 1993 4x4 with a 22RE for $0 but the motor is toast. It does run but just barely. The previous owner drove it for some time with a light bearing noise. Then he finally spun the bearings and now it raps badly and heats up quickly. I was able to drive it the 1/2 mile to my house but it was loud as hell.

First: I was told not to even try to rebuild it because the crank is probably complete junk and the cost would not be worth the rebuild. Does everyone agree with that?

Second: I may try to find something all rotted or banged up and swap the motor. Is there a year range that I should look at? I was told I should use one from a 88-93. Can anyone confirm this and if so what is the difference between this one and one of other years? The only reasonably priced one I've seen so far is from an 88.

This truck came with a plow and I just want to get it running as a work/beater vehicle so I'm trying to get it done as cheap as I can. I wouldn't mind rebuilding it as a project. I just don't want to rip it all down and spend a lot time and effort on it if it's probably junk anyway.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'd rebuild it or get a rebuilt from me. Either way rebuilding those things if you have your duck in a row is well worth the effort.

rebuilding one of these engines is very straightforward. i'd at least pull the engine and then remove the crank to get a good look at the journals. if it looks even a little salvageable, take it in to a machine shop and they can mic it out and figure how much to turn off it. you could always get a used crank for fairly cheap($50 typically), and a master engine set is about $200 from www.engnbldr.com

if you do look for a replacement engine, '85-95 are all fine. just take the manifolds off the donor engine and bolt yours on, and you should be good to go.

Thanks for the input. I might have a line on another 1988 for fairly short money. If that falls through mayne I'll tear it down and have a look.

I just found a guy with an 89 Four Runner that got in an accident and bent his frame. The motor was rebuilt last year and has about 15K on it, or so he says. He wants $400 for the motor. I may make him an offer.

Thanks again.

I got a shortblock engine with all timing pieces, new oil pump, and a master gasket set for $650.00. This was by far the cheapest i found. the engine also came with a 2 year full replacement warranty. I have almost the same story as you, i got the truck for cheap. I was told it needed an fuel pump. I later found out that it had jumped time several times, burnt a hole in the #1 piston, spun 2 bearings, and cracked the block. I was going to rebuild it until i found the block was cracked. I just got the new engine and as soon as i get my head i'll have plenty of work to do.
Any engine from 85-95 should work fine.

yotaman,

Where did you find your short block for $650?

I went and looked at the "rebuilt" motor and wasn't getting any warm fuzzy feelings about it. There were a number of issues that I won't bore everyone with but the two biggest were the fact that it had a bad starter and no battery so I couldn't here it run and the timing cover oil leak that, IMHO, should have been repaired during the alleged rebuid. Those among several other things are making me leary of this one.

I have been getting prices ranging from $750-$1000 for used motors from the local salvage yards and $1600+ for a long block. My motor still runs so I know what works and what doesn't. I would defeinatley buy a short block if I could get one for $650.
