thank you superbleeder, that is what I was getting at with the caddy kit !!!! with that kit you use the 4wd knuckle and the 2wd grease cap in the place of the 4wd oil seal and then cap off the end of the spline tube. This is exactly how the real prerunner race trucks do it. That other guy needs to study up on how prerunner trucks are built and how similar to 4wd's they really are.

BTW for the guys flaming him for wanting to convert his truck into a prerunner, I will put any of your SAS'd 4x4's up to a preped 2wd prerunner or SCORE truck I would be willing to bet the prerunner makes it through faster than any of the 4x4's here on tough terrain. Remember not all of use are rock freaks around here and some of us like to go fast on the trails. Something an SAS would have a tough time doing because of the added unsprung weight on the front end.

Hey ppl... I get prerunners... theyre sick in fact after im done building my rock rig ill be building a prerunner... it will be 4x4 but im going for a dual rig as far as a lil prerunning and a lil rock running... as far as converting 2 a 2x4... what id consider since there is very little difference in the frame.. is finding a 90-95 2x4 4runner with the same dt setup as far as v6 or 4cylinder and BODY SWAP... in my personal opinion it would be easier considering the hoops u are gonna have to jump through to make a 4x4 a 2x4... just my opinion though.

i didn't mean to refer to EVERYBODY in the thread lol

and i see now that all he has to do is take out the diff, cv's, get the dust cap thingy, regrease everything, and if he wants, get rid of the t-case

well i guess i will post something here. you could take the axle,cv's, and put those covers on. wouldnt be too hard and leave your t case. easy and done. then if you ever want 4x4 you can put it back in. you will get maybe 1 or 2 mpg out of it if you are lucky.

now what i would do... im guessing you have a 3.0L v6? i would keep the 4x4, do a full tuneup ( plug wires, cap and rotora, oil change timing belt exc...) put some smaller tires on. you dont ever have too touch the 4wd stick and you will get much better milage with the tuneup. then if you ever get in a situation were you dont have the traction ( and its going to happen with open 2wd lol) you can use 4wd and when you sell the 4runner, the guy who buys it will not slap you in the face and you will get top $

im not being mean or anything i just want to make sure you really want to ditch 4wd before you go a ruin another 1st 4runner that are become harder and harder to find

I don't understand why everybody is bashing him for wanting to build a prerunner.
He never mentioned wanting mpg improvement etc.
Do you guys know what prerunners are? What they're made for? And why they don't need 4 wheel drive?
Maybe everybody should stop flaming him and each other and give him inspiration on his project.
After I'm finished with my 4runner, I'm going to buy a 90's short cab pickup, 2wd or 4wd wich ever comes cheaper, and build a desert dune racing bad ass prerunning machine out of it.
Then you can all flame me too.

just slid under there disconnect the front axles drop th front diff pull the drive shaft. get that plug and seal for a 2wd spindle toss em in and either keep your 4x4 parts incase you might want them one day or sell em. you dont even have to touch the transfer case just leave it alone unless you want to fiddle with the rear end.

bing bang boom done!

you could even fab up a hydraulic pump or something to power off the front flange on the Transfer Case and power a winch or whatever else you want. even toss a twin stick shifter on it and instant pto haha

ok well you must have missed this then
"Yup... not looking for long travel setup, just a simple, bulletproof, fuel efficient runabout that I can haul either 4 people or my camping stuff in/ sleep in....and be able to take the top off. MPG difference on 1993 4runner 4wd V6 auto vs. 2wd V6 auto is 3 MPG City / 4 MPG highway. (www.fueleconomy.gov) That a substaintial difference IMO."

seems too me you read this wrong and should read before you post

3-4 mpg is a big difference i suppose but keep in mind you bought a 4runner...you must have known that the fuel mileage was gonna kind of suck. if you do swap it to 2x4 id def ditch the tcase, turning the extra gears will suck a little power and worsen fuel mileage. i think by the time your done you will have spent more on the swap the you would have extra on gas for a few years. if you really want 2x4 sell your current runner and buy a 2x4 22re 5 speed runner or pick up and throw a shell on it. thats what i would do. but in fairness to the runner finish the summer out with the current set up you have and do your camping and what not an see if you really never do snap it into 4x4 before you make any drastic decisions and regret it later.

what everyone seems to be missing is he isnt wanting to build a "prerunner" or a street 4x4 he is wanting to take the 4x4 out of 4runner... nothing more nothing less... so we arent flaming for him wanting to build a prerunner 4runner. generally we arent flaming him period... were just stating our opinions on the matter and im still politely suggesting BODY SWAP IT ONTO A 2ND GEN 2X4 FRAME and u r done

Anyone ever done this?

Well he did say he wanted to turn it into a prerunner in the first post.

To me removing 4WD from a 4X4 vehicle is just as easy if not easier than doing a body swap. Everything in the end is bolt on. Unlike SAS and 2X4 to 4X4.

One drawback I can see in doing the body swap is he knows his motor and his maintenance history.

Wow, 4wd owners wanting to convert to 2wd, 2wd owners wanting to convert to 4wd. What has this world come to?

Maybe one of the ten commandments should've been "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's drivetrain."
