Backwards Swap 4wd to 2wd?

I'd like to turn my 89 4runner (22re/ 5spd) into a prerunner. I know the 90-95 4runners came in 2wd so I was thinking I could use the front spindles from one of those... then the only thing left to do would to replace the t-case with the rear of 2wd mini's transmission... would this work? Anyone ever done this?

Just drop the front diff, driveshaft, and cv's.

You'd need to swap the rear drive shaft too.

the rear 4x4 is shorter because of the transfer case.

i think.

If you're looking to go "long travel" and get the extra maybe 2" in extra travel by not having the C.V.'s (I don't have any idea why anyone would want to do this. But that's just me I'm smart! LOL)
Go to Total Chaos. They have a great kit. 2x and 4x
Unless its not clear...you should keep the 4x4.

Why? I don't ever use 4x4, so I'd rather not haul it around. I'm guessing mileage would be quite a bit better with 300+ lbs less in the vehicle.

Why would I need different transmission... didn't the 2wd trucks use the same tranny?

although I can see the reasoning, it's nto a very logical thing to do; you would be better off getting a 2wd 4Runner to start with

Total chaos makes kits to where you can retain 4wd....

like mine and for older toyotas as well

But still, you would be turning a unicorn into a just a horse...

I beileve you would have to get the rear housing off a 2wd and i think the 2wd output shaft as well.... (ITs really hard to talk about this) I've never seen anyone want to ruin a good truck like this... Just get a 2wd truck? Mileage would not be worth the work IMO. Get the factory tires which are like 235 75 i beileve and tune the truck.... You would have to re-work the center console since the 4wd shifter will be gone...

To each his own right? I love the 1st gen 4runners and the ability to take the top off... I don't use 4x4, so why have it.

you might want to post on the site: IHateBeingAbleToGetAnywhereWithAStockSetup.com
