Backwards Swap 4wd to 2wd?
#22
there is such things as 4X4 prerunners rfcruse but if you really really don't want 4wd all you would have to do is what was said earlier, remove front diff, cv axles and the front drive shaft, as for the trans/transfer just get yourself a 2wd trans and maybe the driveshaft (not really sure if it's the same between 4wd and 2wd I am sure with a little searching I'd find the answer to that.)
I have said this before on here somewhere, FYI most 2wd prerunners are converted 4X4 vehicles.
But what I would do is go with a Long Travel front, keep the 4X4 and widen the rear and have the best of both worlds.

now im all about 4wd. i couldnt even begin to think about takin out the 4wd in a 4wd truck. but to each his own. dang guys you dont have to flame him so bad. i would just buy a 2wd p/u, put all the longtravel bells and whistles on it, then keep the 4wd runner to pull it out when it gets stuck.

Total Chaos front...and...stay with me here...Tacoma lockable rear axle.
Each is about 3" wider than stock. Uhuh, thats right
Yeah Baby Yeah!

Thanks to those of you who actually had some useful information for me. For those of you who provided unsolicited opinions... I'm sorry your mother's days are so empty that you have found it worth your time to blather on about how cool you are and how stupid you think i am.
It's unfortunate that this Forum has far more opinion than knowledge.

You can run any non-offset axle you want. This has NOTHING to do with the transmission. So NO you don't need a 2wd 7.5" toy axle to go to "2wd."
You don't need to swap in a 2wd transmission UNLESS you wanted to save the little bit of weight by eliminating a transfercase. This would require new crossmember, new transmission and new rear driveline (lengthened)
Removing the front diferential and CV's would leave the wheel bearings open to water contamination if you subermeged the spindle since the spindle would be open to the elements where the CV shaft actually inserts in.
Unless you're hardcore into pre-running removing all the 4wd components will not give you any significat increast in gas mileage. Just compare a stock pickup to a 4runner with the same motor. Gas mileage isn't more than a mile if that.
Better off leaving it alone or buying a factory 2wd runner.
4runners werent made available in 2wd versions till 1989, fyi. Which was when they introduced the new body style with a non-removable top.

There are 2WD versions of all 4Runners, at least through 3rd gen.

If you want a 2x4 then buy a 2x4. In my opinion thats the easiest way. I would think that removing the 4x4 would devalue your rig unless you went with a super cool long travel kit : ). If you want more gas mileage then you should probably get a car

Perhaps you should reread this and follow your own suggestions
This is not true on pre-Taco "early" IFS. The CV isn't exactly sealed to the spindle, and the bearings are on the OUTSIDE of the spindle, so the chance of water contaminating the bearings is no worse than with the CV installed. But if it really freaks you out, just pound a runner stopper into the spindle.

You got one thing right, IFS hubs by design aren't leak proof but water resistant at best.

if removing the cv from the 4wd spindle is so bad then why the heck does Total Chaos use modified 4WD lift spindles in the 2wd caddy kit?
I only mentioned the 2wd trans and driveshaft IF he wanted to remove the x-fer case.
pre 86 4runners did not come in 2wd at all US or otherwise. They were all SFA.
only mention I can find about 2wd 4runners were 90-95 in both 2.4 and 3.0 flavors and the 09-present base SR5 and Limited's come available with both 2wd and 4wd

who the hell came up with the long travel bull crap?!?!?!? the guy never said ANYTHING about long travel...NONE WHAT SO EVER.
the guy asked a simple question...and all you guys can do is flame him...wouldn't surprise me if he left yotatech.
you people remind me of pirate4x4 LOL
and i have NEVER seen OR heard of a 2wd 84-89 4runner.....ever
now 90-05 has 2wd's...because there is a stock one in my town.
the suspension setup is IDENTICAL to my '86 IFS and my '92 IFS

Yup... not looking for long travel setup, just a simple, bulletproof, fuel efficient runabout that I can haul either 4 people or my camping stuff in/ sleep in....and be able to take the top off. MPG difference on 1993 4runner 4wd V6 auto vs. 2wd V6 auto is 3 MPG City / 4 MPG highway. (www.fueleconomy.gov) That a substaintial difference IMO.

the only reason why I brought up long travel was to point out Total chaos is using the 4wd spindle and no front drive shaft in there caddy kit for the 2wd's. I never flamed him BTW.
