backfiring

I been having trouble with my truck since I put in a 86' 22r with around 100k on it. Iv'e heard it run really good so it has potential. But since the swap I'll drive about thirty minute out of town then it will backfire and stall. Ill wait a little it will start up and drive. Driving around town has been okay just a little hesitation if you get on it. Tonight I got a quarter mile from my house and backfire and stalled out. I have a weber new 32/36. The timing is a little advance maybe 5 degrees. I have a holley fuel pressure regulator set at 3.5 psi. thinking about taking it off. all i did today was put on an 02 sensor a crappy bosh one. Its my daily driver so any help appreciated.

I can see two minor problems, 1) Our toyota`s don`t run well with Bosch 02 sensors, i don`t know how they effect carb motors but they make 22RE`s run real bad. 2) You have the fuel presure regulator set to high, weber carbs like 3 psi or less, so try lowering the fuel presure to between 2-3 psi and see if that helps.

I put the old O2 sensor back on and change the fuel pressure to 3 psi. Still only making it about a quarter miles. I know my coolant temp sensor is not hooked up. I never thought that it would cause my truck to run ruff. I goin to the junkyard cus i got to change the ct plug and get a new ct sensor. I figure change this since it is the only thing I know is wrong. I think I am staving for fuel but I dont know what would be causing it. The fuel filter is new and the fuel pump seems to be working fine. It will idle all day long and not stall.

It ended up being my fuel pump. I thought the pump would work or not work. I guess the mechanical pumps can gradually crap out. I'm used to electric fuel pumps. Once again it is the simplest explanation.

good to hear its solved. Did you take everything back to stock? or leave as is and just change the pump?

I left everything except I got a Denso O2 that Im about to put in. Its worth a shot since Im only getting about 16 mpg last I checked with 31's. I do have a problem with the coolant temp sensor though. I originally had a 84 22r with the one wire circle plug ct sensor in my truck. Now I got a 86 plug and sensor for my 86 motor. Some how I got to figure out how to convert the one wire plug to a two wire plug. I'm not as worried about it now that i can drive down the road but it is always nice to hooked up to check the temp. Also, I scored a nice center console from the junkyard out of a 88 4runner that matches my interior and fit perfect for $10. You got to love junkyards.

Well its back to stalling again. I'm going to get a new fuel pump tomorrow. There is no pressure. Is there anything that would cause fuel pumps to fail... maybe the back pressure from the regulator? It ran good for a while after I put the last fuel pump on. Could it be crappy advance auto parts?

no problems with my autozone fuel pump regulated through the holley regulator to 4.5psi and weber with the return line blocked off. 6500 miles and counting.

Just to let everyone know. I don't know why this would happen but both the denso and bosch O2 sensors for a 87 22r do not work on my truck. They both caused my truck to stall out within a quarter mile. She up and running now running all day long. I just blocked off the O2 sensor. So... probably wasn't the fuel pump to begin with but now I got a new one I don't have to worry about it. I have never heard of a problem like this.

hmmm my 87 22r doesn't have an o2 sensor, maybe it's a cali emissions thing. Not sure on what that actually controls, since the carb is not controlled in anyway by electronics. Well except the choke and idle cut-off. Both of which are not A/F ratio dependent.
