B-pillar exterior plastic trim removal?

How does the black plastic trim which is on the B-pillar (the pillar just behind the front door) come off? I've looked all over for a screw or snap to get that off, but I haven't found a way to remove it without breaking something. I need to repair the air vent flapper valve which hides under it.

Yes. It's just a simple reed valve that allows air to escape to the outside, but not back in. Most cars have this thing hidden somewhere.

I thought on the runner it was in the back behind the back cargo glass. Is this in addition to it?

Oh - wait, what year are we talking about? I was thinking 2nd gen.

Sorry - now I know what you are talking about - 1st gen or the pick of the same design. I believe it is held on with spriong clips, but to be sure cal the dealer and ask them. They have an exploded view of it on their system that shows the style of attachment

I forget this forum covers both 1st and 2nd gen. The piece in question is on an 88 (1st gen).

there is only 1 way to do it .

first push the bottom forward to unlock the lower clip . Then up to unlock the 2 upper clips , then down to unlock the 2 center clips .

Problem is , after the sail panel is removed there is no way to get the clips out successfully , and you wont be able to reinstall the sail panel with out the clips in it

I just replace the clips http://www.toyotafiberglass.com/4Runner.htm
