automatic transmission / Transfer case help
took the 87 4runner out Sunday, has an automatic with an unknown condition 22re. the engine burns oil, smokes on start up.
had it in 4L, with the trans in 1, 4 people and a ice chest, it literally couldn't go up a hill, had to take the bypass cause it was going up, and slowed down, with wot, and stopped. no power, no going up.
took 2 passengers out and the cooler, and it seemed fine the rest of the trail.
still not major power, but was able to go up everything.
I am also seeing that it has a hydraulic t-case? would it aiming uphill make it go into hi gear?
I had a couple people saying that it didn't seem like it was in low, I even went under and un did the linkage to verify that it was all the way engaged into 4 low, which it seemed to be.
the motor reved up to around 2200 rpm, then stopped, it wasn't like the trans was slipping, more like when you try to power brake and it couldn't break the wheels loose, it was just revving against the torque convertor.
any ideas?
any links to how this t-case works?
played with it some more and figured out a little
took it out tonight, started it in the driveway, put it in 4 low, with the hubs unlocked, and pulled out, it was defiantly Not in low gear. so i went in and out of it on the way to my destination, and still no low gear. I forgot and left it in low gear when I parked.
went to leave from my destination, and all of a sudden I had low gear. Put it in 4 hi, and back to 4low, and no low gear.
get to my neighbor hood, and got to thinking, so I shut it off, put it in low gear, start it and put in drive, and I have low gear, the only way low gear works is if I start the engine with the trans case in low gear. pull it out with key on, it doesn't go back to low until i shut the engine off and re start.

i think, his t-case is only engaging 4-lo when he starts the truck with it in 4-lo, if it is anything else it wont engage correctly.
and he is asking what can he do to fix it?
im not sure but that is what i got from it.

Yes, has no low, unless the truck is started in low.
works fine then, until you put it in high, then to get it back in low, it needs to be shut back off.
I can't find any info on how this t-case works. I keep reading about hydraulically controlled, but can't find any info on how.
