I'd like an auto, I think my lunchbox locker would work smoother with an auto. Maybe I'll convert mine from a stick to an auto. Are there any writeups on that?

With a manual, if you're gonna need second for the wheelspeed up the hill, just start in second!

a manual with low gearing will compensate for the stall factor. if you can over come the resistance with more mechanical reduction and not torque converter slip, i think you will have more control. my stick shift has saved me in the snow too. it allows you to hold gears and keep it from spinning so wildly. thats just my opinion. I also like to be able to not have to worry about the trans temp so much. and being able to dump it is nice for the mud.

manuals can take more abuse. also can put out more torque, so if you need a lot of power to get over a rock, a manual is for you. if not, then yes an auto makes trail life a lot easier. same with air conditioning... though i wouldnt know about that...

I have to disagree about the "more torque" comment - the torque converter actually DOUBLES the torque to the wheels at low RPM's. Generally, with an auto, for FIRST gear, you can get away with a taller diff ratio, but on these trucks that is more than overwhelmed by the huge overdrive requiring lower gears.

i wheel my auto on the rocks and it does just fine. down hill in 1st low gives me plenty of control, climbing takes a bit of finess on the throttle and that comes from seat time.

ive never had the pleasure of wheeling a stick but most of my club members have stick and seem to do well. best suggestion i can give would be to have someone with a stick take you out so you can get first hand experience.

just my .02.

you can gear an AT and get a AWShift.com shift kit, which lets you pick the gear you wish to start in and torque converter lockup...

So your control reason, falls away.

Really its a matter of talent, and a dying art, I don't want to sound conceited here but I feel I am a better driver then most people on the road nowadays because I have to pay attention to what I'm doing, I am in complete control of my vehicle, and most kids now can't drive stick, they don't even teach it in drivers ed. sticks last longer, have less horsepower loss, and offer more control.. It really is a dying art, and I like toyota's for the reason that they still over manual shift transmissions in their new vehicles, something most people don't as america gets fatter, more commercialized, and lazier, if your too lazy to shift a gear, you shouldn't be driving. I'll get off my soapbox now..

Not enough torque in second, the engine bogged down. Think snowy hills on FSR that have water bars going across.
