Auto Transmission solenoids ?
I hav read alot aobut auto trans colenoids and how they cause may problems before I ask my question I will give some backround and what I have done to date.
I have a 86 4runner 4cy 4x4 with auto trans and I have not had any problems with it prior to this day. I was driving and I stoped put in part went inside came back out started it and put into drive and nothing happened I put it into rev. nothing happened put it thru all the other gears with the same results.
I first checked the fluid and it was good no smells or any odd coloring I then replaced the kickdown cable; I have pulled the TCU and did a cursory (qwick) inspection of all the wires I could find in the short time I was under the truck.
Now I have been told and have read some stuff and I was wanting some more detale if possible:
1) I have read that if I unplug the TCU the transmisson should work manuly provideing that theres nothign worng mechanical (I will try this first seeing how the TCU is out.
2) I have read that the solenoids can get gummed up or go out and need to be cleaned or replaced my question here is how do I go about getting to them I have seen a diagram that showed the gen local of the solenids but nothing about how they come out while I was looking under the truck It look like some of the Items would screw right out but I don't know if I have to pull the pan to get to them so if anyone could clear that up for me before i start wrinching on all kinds of stuff LOL.
Any thing more I can find out will help alot

I am in the same situation. I have the fsm but it is just not clear about the location of the solenoids. I am getting codes that #2speed sensor is bad, #1 solenoid bad, and lock up solenoid bad. Has anyone torn through their auto?

I believe the shift solenoids are all located inside the trans. You have to remove the sump pan on the underside of the trans (which requires draining the fluid from the sump), and the solenoids are mounted on the valve body which is mounted to the bottom of the trans and revealed when the pan is removed.
