Question auto trans touble

What tells the solenoids to turn on and off on a 1985 auto trans 22re truck. mine will not shift in drive, it starts out in high....but all the gears are there if you shift it manually.

The tranny computer.

It gets information from several other sensors (speed sensor, etc)..

You need to see if there are any codes and, if so, what they are.

My speedo cable is not hooked up right now...will that affect things?

i know one speed sensor is on the transmission, where is the other one that is controled by the speedo cable?

There are two speed sensors, #1 is in the instrument cluster and #2 is on the driver side of the transmission.


If the overdrive light blinks while driving, then you can pull a code from the ECT unit. You ground the square plug on the driver fender.


Switch the truck on, not starting, with it in park and overdrive on, and the overdrive light will flash a code. This will let you know of any electrical problems with the transmission.
