Auto trans problem

Searched all the sites for as much info as possible but no luck. I have a 90 4unner 3.0 auto. I drove the truck all day stopped to run in the house came out 10 min. later and would not go into reverse or drive, got it to move in 4lo. added fluid took it for shifts through all the gears and OD no problems, when i shut it off and it sits for a bit i have to go through the put in 4lo and then back. to get it to move. No problems as long as i do not shut it down to long. Any help as to where to look, nuetral safety switch, shift solenoid, pick up screen clogged. Thanks

There is a valve in the valve body for the transfer case that is sticking. You can try cleaning it but the two I did had to be rebuilt anyway because an element inside was giving off debris and that is what stuck the valve.

Flushing the Trans

Now I know I said before this was a useless service to pay for and this is why.

1. You can do it yourself in the driveway no need to pay someone. All you need are two or three CLEAN 5 gallon buckets and enough tubing to connect the input and output lines from the transmission and hang them down in the buckets.

2. Remove the transmission pans and clean any debris inside, remove filter and clean or replace. Re install pans and fill transmission. Then remove the transmission oil cooler lies at the cooler and connect them to the buckets. Put a quart of trans fluid in both buckets. Make sure lines are clamped to bucket rims and submerged and crank car over once or twice to show which bucket is which. The bucket that is empty will be the supply side. Fill this bucket with 4 gallons of new trans fluid and crank vehicle and put it in drive while someone watches the buckets to make sure the bucket A. indeed has suction and is taking the fluid, and B. The level of the new fluid never runs out. Run the trans through the gears and shift it in 4 low etc. while it is changeing the fluid. After running enough fluid through trans you can look closely at the color of the fluid coming out and compare to the supply bucket color. They should be close. After satisfactorily flushing trans, blow compressed air through the cooler both ways then fill with mineral spirits spray though again. If ANYTHING comes out like metal chip, prepare for an overhaul.

3. Obtain trans manual at Dealer for around $30 depending on location. After doing this remove the rearward pan on the trans, the small one. Remove the valve body and identify which valve is sticking. Remove from bore and inspect for scratches/ clean bore of debris. Polish with scotch brite fine and lube and re install. Make sure all valves travel freely and do not "hang up". Re install.

4. Now after doing this if the valve continues to hang you can pull the pans again and see if they are full of debris again then if they are, nothing to do but remove.

5. This could be helpful if you are planning on trading the car OR it might just free up everything enough to let you save a little cash and time before overhaul. But in reality if this is going on it has been my experience that only a removal and inspection can solve the problem. Look on the brightside, good chance to replace the rear main seal and lube up the suspension and driveline components. Also a good time to address any exhaust issues you may be having. Not so bad a scenario for a weekend hotrod wheeler but for a daily driver a pita, and wallet

Yeah I did a home flush on my Ford Taurus like that, except I made a 5 gal bucket into a pressure vessel (low pressure, like 10-20 psi) for the supply bucket. I didn't know there was suction at the supply line, do you have to seal up the dip stick tube to get suction?

If you have the Transmission ECM also I don't see why not but I never did it.

Suction, good point some do some don't I am not positive if this one does. If you got it primed right it should though.
