Argh, clunking, knocking engine
Had to pull the old 4runner over this morning and have it towed to the shop. It's making a godawful lot of clunking sounds, stops by itself all the time and I fear the worst. Before it happened, it had a bad regular klunking, knocking sound, but it was definitely worse at light gas or when I was letting go off the gas pedal. Any advice is always appreciated, but I'll probably hear later today or early tomorrow what the dealer thinks it is.

I had the exact same problem happen to me about a week and a half ago. Turned out my rear main seal went out and was pissing oil out. I am in the process of finding a remanufactured engine right now. Good luck!

Oh, no smoke or leaks as far as I can tell.

Rod knock. Common.
After you spend a bunch of time figuring out what a rebuilt 3.slow will cost, do the 3.4.
You'll be way further ahead than if you screw around with the 3.turd

After reading a bunch of threads on the subject, I'm rebuilding the baby. Wish me luck. It's a small step up from changing cv boots and rear coils maybe
