I think that's a bit low for 31's...I think you'll be revin quite high in the R's. Do you have a 5spd or auto?

I run 5.29's with 33 x 10.5's, also an auto rig, I have the 3.0.

At 65 miles per hour on the freeway I am spinning about 2600 RPM. I would not want to be any higher than that. I am about 13% lower geared than I was with 28.5" tires and 4.10's.

In town, my gas mileage dropped way off, partly due to the gearing and partly due to the extra weight of the bigger tires and steel wheels.

You could do it, but it would tach pretty darn high at freeway speeds on I-5.

If you are looking at going to 33's down the road, then you would not be wasting anything, as you will want the 5.29's with 33's in an auto rig.

I have 5.29's with 265/75/16 which is little less than 32". Its fine. The truck actually loves the gearing considering its an auto. The RPM is around 3-3.2K when driving 65-70mph

I've been running 36" SX's on 5.29's with a 22re\Auto.

2K at 55-60 (I think, never checked it with a GPS)

Honestly, I can't imagine 31's on it now, it would shift out of first gear in within 10 feet of starting. Way to low, even with an auto, IMO

I dunno man, 5.29s and 31's might not be a great choice when it comes to long stretches of flat hwy driving, but then again you've got an auto w/overdrive so your RPMs will be slightly lower than us 5spd guys.

I run 4.88s with 31s and at 60-65mph (reads about 65-70mph), my RPMs are around 3300 with a 5spd. At 70mph (reads 78ish), i'm at 3500rpms I'd guess that you'd be around 3500rpms going 65mph down I-5 with 5.29s and 31s. It will definitely help you out in the mountain passes, but on the flats you may regret it. If you drive like a grandma you might be ok, but when the speed limit is 70.....

Depending on how much of a load you've got, I'd stay with your 4.10s and take I-15 toward Bakersfield, then cut back over to I-5 for the rest of the way. From what I remember, the grades weren't as steep on that side. Going through the mtn. passes from Shasta up to Portland might give you trouble though, but definitely doable.

I used to take my old '87 yota 22ret 4wd x-cab 5spd 4.10s and a camper shell, up/down I-5 all the time loaded down with about 1000lbs worth of crap when I was still in college. It was a dog in the hills, but made it through just alright. I had some trouble with my clutch not grabbing well after it heated up in uphill LA/Valencia traffic.

If you do decide to put in the gears in just the rear, you don't have to pull the front driveshaft, just don't put it into 4wd and you should be good to go.

I ran that combo on my 88 Runner V6 auto 31" 529 gears. I was just fine with it...even on the highway. 70 mph was just over 3000rpm I think. And the cruise had no trouble holding it...no downshifting all the time.
I also had an 87 Runner(at the same time as the 88) it had the 22RE auto 33x10.50" 571 gears. It ran within about 1% of the overall gearing as the 88 model. That 22RE really appreciated the gear/tire combo. I remember that 3400 rpm equals 75 real mph.
It's the same combos I would run when I get my next Runner.
If you are worried about mountain passes and towing some stuff then 529 sounds like what you need.

I wouldn't gear that low for just one pass. Just think, you've gotta drive the rest of the freeway, which is mostly level( at least in the valley), and you'd be pushing the RPM's pretty high, and possibly committing MPG suicide. Not to mention the added stress of higher RPMs for long periods of time.
