Anyone have any thoughts on lifting an 89 Toyota pickup.. 2x4, automatic. Would there be way to accomplish this without spending too much $?

How much lift do you want?

 

try fabtech or something like that if you want a big lift, being 2WD, you can lift away.... If you dont want a lot of lift, just do spring spacers, that'll keep it cheap, I am doing a 3.5 inch coilover setup in the front, and just using Add-A-Leafs in the rear.

 

I was told that I had to do at least a 6" lift to fit 31's. This was according to Downey offroad.

Spring spacers? Would that be the same as blocks? The last time I saw, there wasn't any springs in the front. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Any ideas where I can get these spring spacers?

 

The problem is that your truck's rear is spring under, am I correct? 6" of lift should be about right.

My friend has a '96 Taco little 2WD he put a fabtech kit on, it was a Spring-over for the rear, and some control arms/steering knuckles/coil overs in the front I think, he got about 6" of lift (close to 4WD stock height)... he still would rub 31's while turning and a little suspension stuff (like driving into a parking lot) because the 2WD wheel wells are smaller than the 4WD. He went with 33x10.50's for a while, but they rubbed A LOT.

Also note that you may run into gearing difficulties if you go with bigger tires.

Yikes I forgot about that too, your front supension doesn't have any springs, it has beams... My girlfriend's '92 truck was like that.

Sounds like a custom lift job to me, or none at all...

 

I'm beginning to realize that maybe it's a up hill battle. But if anyone else has any suggestions, please jump in and advise.

I called around the local shops and ask about body lifts and I was quoted $500-$600 just for labor. Is that outrageous or is that fair? It can't be that bad to lift the body.. is it?

 

Unfortunately, I don't think your truck will be very forgiving in getting lifted...

Small body lifts are pretty easy to do, but larger ones (read: 3") necessitate lengthening many things, such as the steering linkage. That, plus a 3" body lift with no suspension lift would be pretty ugly IMO. I prefer to stay around 1", but that won't really do much for you.

 

You can do body lift using Roger Brown BL.
As far as suspension lift goes, you can cranked the torsion bar and get longer the rear shackles.

Downey has a whole subframe that you can buy from them if you plan to launch it.

are the 2wd front ends different that the 4wheel drive of the same era? i didnt think they were. based on your pic it doesnt look like you have a really low 2wd. i noticed that they also made 2wd that were lifted higher from the factory. a pic might help us out alot.

yes, there's a torsion bar on there. I just use this to back up as proof.

Crank it up and you'll get lift.

NO trouble. Just want to make sure we don't pass along wrong info ...that's all. Others have done the same to me....so, no biggie.

 

go with some bj spacers, and like a 2in body, w/ a spring over in the rear or extended shackles. and just crank up your bars, or get new ones to give you a better ride.
