Question Is this the alternator

this morning my brake and battery charge light came on....but the car kept going and the voltage was about half after about a mile the voltage was back up and the brake and battery lights went out. This afternoon the same thing happened but the voltage wouldn't come up unless i kept the motor at about 4k rpm.....My instinct says alternator....does anyone have any other ideas. it is an 87 all stock 22re.

brake and batt light usually means alternator. you can take it to a number of different parts stores and have it tested for free to see if it is indeed dieing

Alternator, or belt. If the belt is tight...then its the alternator. I;ve had the same problem twice on my 86, and once on my 87.

alternator or battery! most likely alternator. Most auto-part stores will check your alternator for free if you dont know how to use a voltmeter or dont have one. Try checker, autozone, pep-boys, etc..

*edit* ah! MMA beat me!

Pull it out and take it in for a more accurate bench test. They can test it while still in the car, but the dude I had test it at AutoZone said it's not the accurate, and was overall just kind of whiney that he had to come outside in the heat and test mine (boo-hoo).

Could be worn alternator brushes

I had the same problem on my truck, I replaced the alternator brushes and the problem went away. Cheap 10$ fix.
