altenator testing question
iv been having doubts that altenator is going to hold up much longer. iv herd the best way to test it is to start the truck up and disconnect positive battery cable for atleast 30 seconds and if your truck continues to run your altenator is fine. is this a 100 percent true test. my truck has passed it twice but every once in a while at idle my battery guage inside truck reads about 11volts until i start moving agian.

hold the handle end of a screwdriver in your fingertips, hang the metal end at the end of the bolt on the alternator pulley, if it has magnetic pull then it is working properly, for now anyways.

I am having a similar problem where the voltage goes down and the battery light comes on and then a little while later it goes off. There is an upgrade on a separate wire that goes from the battery to the slow blow fuse that may cure this problem and the other problem of my radio turning off every now and again. They may be two distinct issues, but maybe it will cure both. I will post the thread I found from an earlier post.

Here's the long-long post for the electrical wiring upgrade. I will perform this to see how it does. There could be some additional advantages other than solving some problems. Read the entire posts with replies
